Letter to the Editor
It’s election season again and we are watching the sedition of ideas within particular groups in order to realign with others in the name of democracy. People are temporarily shifting their beliefs in order to gain a majority in the hope that an elected official will legitimize their lives. It’s not easy to abort these notions that impassion their lives, but many do with full intention of giving those concepts life once again. And that is the key to betrayal.
Humanity is always looking, consciously or unconsciously to subvert God and his plan for our lives to gain the very thing he offers; “…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” And it is in the context of acquiring and maintaining these three where the treachery occurs.
As described in the verse above, our ancestors were looking to worship. God had implanted a desire to adore something greater than them, but a rebellion took place in their heart. Not a willingness to subvert the worship that God offered, but the terms it was given. And so there was lying, cheating, corruption, and a host of other actions used to gain God’s promised life seditiously. Men chose to honor themselves in what they made with their hands instead of honoring God with what he made with his words.
But the betrayal came back to haunt them and it still does today in us. We become slaves to our desire to be glorified because we are unable to maintain it. In our struggle to achieve life, liberty or happiness we constantly fight to keep it from slipping through our hands. Humanity is just not able to manage God’s gifts without God.
So we have two choices; live a life that subverts God’s will or live in God’s will.
