“Get away from me or I will pull the trigger!”
“Okay…okay, I’m not going to come any closer, just, please put the gun down. I won’t try anything if you will just tell me what I can say to show you this is a mistake.”
“Mistake…my whole life is a mistake! Nothing has ever turned out right for me. What makes you think I want to hear anything you have to say? What do you think you are a priest, or something? You are just a cop!”
“Would you like me to get a priest here for you?”
“No…just go away. I know what I want to do. I can’t take it anymore. I want to die! My husband left me. He said I didn’t satisfy him anymore. He keep singing that stupid song, ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction,’ just to taunt me and belittle me, then he just walked out the door one day and never came back. My kids hate me. They tell me it’s my fault their Daddy left! It has never been easy for me! There’s no love in my life, no joy, no reason to live. Just go...leave me alone.”
“Oh, lady, their has got to be something to cling to. What about your kids? Kids always say hurtful things, but I know yours must love you. You are their mother and children need their mothers! Think about what this would do to them. They would be marked for life!”
“No, No…stop it! Leave them out of this. I have nothing to live for. Please…I…I want to end this pain.”
“Ma’am, I just can’t let you take your life. Life is precious. Tomorrow offers a new day, a new chance at happiness. Sometimes we have to experience pain just to know what joy is all about. I don’t have all the answers, nobody does, but I do know things can change for the better. Please give me the gun. Don’t make me witness something that will tear me up inside.”
With that statement, the lady lowered the gun to her side and began to cry uncontrollable. I seized the moment and rushed forward, grabbing the gun from the, would be victim. She fell into my arms sobbing and moaning like I have never seen before.
Thank God, she recovered from her death wish. That was over twenty years ago. Several months ago, I was attending a Faith Satisfies seminar at a big church in my town when a strikingly beautiful lady came up to me and asked me if I were the Thompson that used to be a cop. After informing her that I was, she grabbed me and hugged me like I was her long lost brother. Being a little shaken, I asked her if everything was all right. She blurted out, between sobs, that she was the lady I had talked out of shooting herself those years ago.
To make a long story short, she went on to tell me how she got into a church and found a reason to live in Christ Jesus. She reminded me that I had told her tomorrow offers a new day and a new chance at happiness. She never thought that could happen for her till she found the Lord.
After seeing how close they came to losing her, her children came to her side and supported her with the love she so desperately needed.
She then turned to point out one of the speakers at the Faith Satisfies seminar as being her husband. Yes, the one who left her! They got back together after she found the Lord. Her faith and commitment brought him to the saving knowledge of Jesus and the rest is history. He started testifying, in churches, about not getting any satisfaction in his life and marriage, and it grew into lectures, and then life changing seminars like the one I was attending.
Small world doesn’t even begin to say it. What were the chances of all these events coming full circle to a different kind of meeting of the parties involved? Divine appointment…yes, I truly believe it was.
Isa 58:11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
