Riding high up in the saddle
On a horse named Chet with mangy tail
And asthmatic lungs that rattle
A strapping ‘joe’ and feeble steed
Hobbling westward toward the sun
A swaybacked nag in need of feed
Carrying an outlaw with a gun
To his credit Carl desired a burly horse
A lack of funds - the haunting question
Chet was gentle, kind and cheap of course
But bore massive stallion indigestion
Not so bad it seems if you’re upwind
Eyes watered down the trail
The strongest muscle was Chet’s rear end
Beware the horse’s tail
A bandana rests ‘round cowboy’s neck
Dust parching the duo’s throats
Chet’s aching limbs are held in check
By the disdain of gazing goats
With the bank in view, a plan is hatched
Carl covered handsome features
Chet waited outside while wits were matched
With a gorgeous equine creature
Chet followed down the wide main drag
While Carl finished up inside
Man and horse in a game of tag
Carl’s luck just missed his ride
The Sheriff tracked young Carl down
Tossed him in the hoosegow
Three squares a day and a pillow down
Cowboy Carl’s making bitter vows
You may find Chet long in the tooth
But he is no longer bored
A pretty filly in a pasture - truth?
Good company’s its own reward
