Lovers usually serenade their loved ones with beautiful words: “You light up my life”, “You are the light of my life”, “You are my soul’s delight, and other romantic lyrics. This is heart-warming for the loved one, who needs to be reassured of being loved. If the love is unrequited, pleading in song for a response becomes urgent.
We sing songs of praise to God to show how much we love and worship Him. How do we measure God’s love? His love cannot be measured. It knows no bounds. He sent His only begotten son to save us from our sins by allowing Him to be crucified on the cross on Calvary. He came to light our way out of the darkness that Adam’s sin brought into the world. We cannot find our way out of this darkness by ourselves. We need the light of Jesus to guide us so that our light will shine before men that they may see our good works.
Some of us go through a tunnel of darkness that never seems to end, because there is no light to guide us out of it.. Our sinful nature blinds us to what is good and right, what is truth and what is not. We keep moving on, getting nowhere fast, but still holding on to whatever is not honourable, just, pure, lovely and gracious. Then there are those who go through a maze of darkness. Unless they get out of this maze, they cannot see the light. They cannot “walk as children of .light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true)” The maze confuses them and they go around in circles following one wrong path after another.
Are we walking as children of light? Is our light shining before men? Are they seeing our good works? We are bombarded on every side with injustice, dishonour, impurity, obscene language on the radio and on the television, and on the streets, lack of consideration for others, aggressive behaviour and ridicule. What message are we sending to our children?. This negative behaviour has far-reaching consequences for our society. What can we as Christians do? We must light up other people’s life – show patience, love, kindness, strive for peace, even when all around us seems bent on confrontation. It may not be so easy.
.
Unless we seek God’s help. Unless we call on the name of Jesus to light our way out of the complexities of life, out of those danger zones in which we find ourselves, we will be lost in a maze of sin and darkness and sorrow. We must let Him be Master of our fate and not try to master our own fate. He is the way, the truth and the light.
We walk by faith, not by sight.
God’s guiding hand shows us the light
To obey His word both day and night.
No need for fear, no cause for fright,
With lustrous moon and stars so bright
We reach towards the heavenly light.
