I sat thinking. Our Lord wanted us to be the light of the world. What exactly did He mean? What did He want us to do, as light?
“What are the properties of light? How do they compare with how we behave?” These questions kept ringing in my mind as I sat, musing.
One property of light impresses me.
Light never throws light on itself! (Pun, intended)
The source of light sends out light rays. These rays fall on other things and people and light them. Make them shine.
What a lesson we can learn then? We ought to, like light, make others shine. A challenge for me indeed. If I can do that, then I can easily say, with John the Baptist, “He must increase and I must decrease”
This then should our formula for life be:
Our first priority should always be, the Lord Jesus Christ, and His Kingdom. (Matt.6: 33) (J= Jesus)
Second should be our concern and love for others, our brothers and sisters. (O = Others)
Thirdly and finally, we should think about our own selves. (Y = You)
Then we will have JOY, real joy. Light dispels darkness. If we have this JOY in our mind and behave as ‘light’, then surely we can dispel the darkness of ego and sin.
Then, surely will men see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven.
“Father of Lights, light us up so that we can make others, our brothers shine. Let us decrease, Lord and the others increase. Amen.”
