A number of years ago my husband and I bought our first home in Toronto, Canada. In order for us to find a house IN Toronto that would be large enough for our family and within out budget, we had to settle for a bit of a ‘fixer-upper’. Mark was not nicknamed “Markgyver” for nothing. He had wonderful ideas of what we could do to improve this little house! The ‘seventies’, brown nick-knack racks just had to go. The kitchen would need a total renovation. Of course a general paint job throughout would be necessary to give it a facelift.
We were ready to tackle the job, but little did we realize how much work we had put ourselves up to! The days passed quickly and before we knew it we only had a week left until we were to move in. “Mark, we’re not going to get this done in time! I really don’t want to be living in the middle of another renovation project!”
“We’ll make it, Hon! Relax! No problem!”
Panic started setting in. I was tired. The 12-foot walls in the split-level house looked like an insurmountable cliff. My kitchen was in shambles with all the cupboard doors off and sawdust everywhere as dear hubby continued his hard work creating his beautiful masterpieces. There was no way we were going to get this place presentable before the weekend! I could just picture my three children running around in the middle of this construction site/home. “Been there! Done that! Don’t want to do it again!”
Knock, knock.
“Hon, can you get that?” came the call from a distant corner of the kitchen.
I worked my way towards the door, tripping over paint cans and boxes, and saw the most wonderful sight! Three extra-large Tim Horton’s Ice Cappuccinos! Behind these delicious summer coffees was a beaming smile. It was our new friend, Dave, to the rescue. Dave was a single guy we had recently met at our church and we had really clicked with him. “You guys need a hand?”
Did we ever! “Come in, Dave! How great to see you!”
Before long Dave was climbing a ladder to dizzying heights cutting in and rolling in the paint. Conversation and laughter helped the time pass quickly as we worked. Not only did Dave stay with us till midnight, he came again and again until we were ready to move in! Each time he arrived with a treat and his bright welcome smile.
What was sure to have been a stressful, hectic week transformed itself into a busy but fun-filled ‘labor party’ because of a very thoughtful, caring and committed friend. Can you think of someone who could use some help this week? Go throw a ‘labor party’! You’ll be hard pressed to know which of you will be the most blessed!
