For many years, I knew that writing was going to be a big part of my life. In fact, from the age of 5, writing became an important way for me to deal with my world.
I grew up in Tucson Arizona and had a normal childhood from the outsider looking in. However, there were internal family struggles that were kept hidden from the rest of the world.
My father was an alcoholic. He was not abusive physically but the emotional insecurities and scars were real nonetheless.
It seems that every part of my childhood was tainted with the problems that alcoholics bring to a family. In our situation, my father was a construction worker or the more specific term, "rodbuster". In my limited understanding, it seemed that everyone that my father worked with was a drinker.
After work, it was not uncommon for my dad and his buddies to go to the local bar. It was never just a social drink. Intoxicated, he would make his way home. I can remember many times waking up in the morning and seeing my dad slumped over the wheel of our car that had somehow made it into our driveway! It looked as though he were dead which prompted me many times to check his breathing.
Life was filled with worry for my mother and the rest of our family. We never knew when my dad would return home and be in a "bad mood". On my way home from school, I can remember hoping that his car would not be in there. Oh the relief I felt when the driveway was empty!
