All gathered for a bounteous feast one day--
But just before they shared the luscious food,
They all—within their hearts—began to pray.
Yes, each began to pray.
Our thanks, dear God, for every blessing here.
‘Tis only by Your mercy we are fed.
Please smile upon our gathering, Lord. Amen!
“Well, let’s enjoy!” the village mayor said—
The jolly mayor said.
“Please pass the peace,” said Patty Peppercorn,
“For recently, I’ve had my share of strife.
My heart says ‘up’, my brain says ‘upside down’—
It’s quite a queasy way to live my life;
Uneasy, queasy life.”
“I’ll take a flagon of fulfillment, then,”
Said Frankie Featherweight, on Patty’s left.
“My soul’s been feeling empty for too long,
So fill ‘er up—I won’t leave here bereft!
No, nevermore bereft.”
“I’ll take one portion of prosperity—
No, make that two,” said Peter Pumpkinseed.
“Or three! You see, I plan to share my plate
With people from North Down-And-Out, in need.
They surely are in need!”
“A ladleful of love is what I’d like,”
Said little Lucy Lacewing, only eight.
“I want to show the children in my school
That people are to cherish, not to hate;
To play with, never hate.”
“Well, I need strength,” said Sally Scuppernong,
And took a steaming spoonful from the bowl.
“The task ahead of me is very great
And I will need some help to reach my goal—
My distant, distant goal.”
Horatio Hobby spoke up next. “My friends,
I’ll take a heaping helping of that hope.
My future’s so uncertain, so unclear,
Without it, I’m not sure that I could cope.
I really couldn’t cope.”
“Just pile my plate with purpose, if you please,”
Penelope Paroo said with a smile.
“So when I’ve had my fill, I’ll understand
Why I’ve been given time here for a while,
For just a little while.”
Jemima Jitterbug reached for dessert—
A jelly jar of joy, filled to the brim.
“Here’s what I need—if you don’t mind, I’ll eat
The whole jar. (I’ve been feeling rather grim.)
Uncomfortably grim.
So everyone in Allegorica
Enjoyed a blessing from God’s gracious hand.
From His abundance, each were fully fed,
And thankfulness was sung throughout the land—
God’s happy, favored land.
