A callous act of treason, so hard to comprehend;
That one who shared His table could to such depths descend
Is fearsome testament indeed to mankind’s downward trend.
Was chosen a disciple, he lived with Him each day
Saw His mighty miracles; first hand he heard Him say
Life-changing truth of Scripture which opened up the way
For all men to be pardoned if they would just obey.
He’d seen Him walk on water, he’d seen Him raise the dead,
Saw how with loaves and fishes the multitude were fed;
A friend to lowly sinners, to hypocrites a dread,
Who came to free the captives, before Whom demons fled.
But yet without a scruple a true friend he betrays
The lowest act of treason that time could not erase—
A ‘Judas kiss’ is still in use, a well-known common phrase
Testament to treachery down to these latter days.
But all things work together for good to His own friends,
Even acts of treachery God turns to His own ends;
And though Christ was crucified resulting grace transcends
The depravity of man—The end that God intends.
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. Psalm 41:9. NKJV.
