I can see him still,
Walking from school homeward,
A good five miles away
On a dusty rural road.
With books twine-wrapped
And strapped to his back,
He took long swift steps,
Carrying his lunch bag in one hand.
I never knew what had been inside,
For he always found
A solitary place to eat
Away from the crowd of noisy teenagers.
Aside from staring rudely at him,
The others left him alone.
His clothes were clean,
But ill-fitting, like maybe,
They were his father’s hand-me-downs.
His hair was over-long on the sides,
Obviously not cut by a barber.
He spoke when spoken to,
Yet I never really saw him
In a conversation with anyone.
He did not make oral comments
Or answers to questions in class.
I had not known before
Such an introverted student.
With his penchant for privacy,
The other students didn’t see his grades,
And did not know how smart he was,
But I did—near-genius, in fact.
His test answers and his written work
Far exceeded that of any of his classmates.
I enjoyed, particularly, observing
The gleam of understanding in his eyes
As he grasped deep concepts
And his smile of appreciation
At the humor in a story or poem.
I moved away before his junior year,
But I have always wondered
What this brilliant young man
Achieved in his life.
