Contemplating the cup He must bear—
The price of God’s love for our pardon—
There was no one to stand with Him there.
His disciples, eyes leaden and weary
To the weakness of flesh all succumb—
God’s works to mere mortals are dreary
Till the strongman’s control’s overcome.
Like when Christ was transfigured before them
And the Kingdom in glory they saw
A blanket of slumber came o’er them—
In their flesh couldn’t handle their awe.
It’s a feature of Adam’s descendants—
The disciples epitomise all;
In the fallen the flesh has ascendance,
Seeks to stifle the wakening call.
It’s so easy to snooze to destruction
Ignore the alarm when it sounds
To be fooled by your heart’s self-seduction
In a world where sedation abounds.
So awake! Pay heed to my warning,
The nighttime of snoozing is gone,
The great day of judgement is dawning;
Don’t let sluggishness bring you undone.
