four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal
by the prophet
surely Baal is a god
perhaps he’s deep in thought
or busy
or travelling
maybe he’s asleep and must be awakened
shout louder!
I am like that bull cut up
once whole and complete
once ploughing a straight furrow - now
sliced into pieces by
the fragile job market and
zero hours contracts
I am dismantled by redundancy
and welfare benefits
I am laid on the wood
aspirations root-cut and felled
branded a shirker
blamed for my own downfall
I am ready for the fire
unable to pay my own way
no longer an asset but
named a parasite
a burden
morning till noon I call
the dance in me
resembles the jig of a corpse caught
in a hangman’s noose
others have done the slashing
not with swords and spears
but with words
written and spoken
soaked in scorn
shout louder!
I have no voice for shouting and
You have no ears for tired whispers
would that I could repair
what was broken
would that I could douse myself
in jars of hope
three times over
the trench dug around me is
overgrown with sorrow
stepping forward to pray
the prophet demands an answer and
fire falls that consumes everything
including doubt
when I pray
when I demand an answer
only silence
where is my fire?
I have no accusation to
level at Baal who is no god
but at You
who was and is and is to come
I will hurl my words
surely you are God
are You deep in thought?
or busy?
or travelling?
are You asleep and must be awakened?
where is my fire?
answer me, Lord, answer me
so I might know
You turn Your heart
back again to me
You who will not slumber
keep me safe
God, You who neither slumbers nor sleeps
keep me
keep me
that I might fall prostrate too and cry
“the Lord, the Lord – He is God”
(Inspired by 1 Kings 18)
