Enjoying carefree, happy days,
Playing at games with other children—
Tag, Red Rover, hide and seek.
We recited singsong rhymes
While jumping rope,
And roller-skated on broken sidewalks.
But when came dusk,
And Dad whistled for dinner,
I ran on bare feet with my siblings,
Trying to be first at the table.
Here we sat in the softly lighted kitchen,
Filled with mouthwatering aromas
Of roast beef or fried chicken,
Fresh-baked homemade biscuits
And scrumptious pie or cake.
Eager to pass the bowls of food,
We squirmed while Dad asked the blessing,
And after our plates were filled,
Sounds of talking and teasing and laughing
And occasional squabbling swirled above us.
Our parents expected us to be obedient
To their rules or pay the consequences.
We learned both at home and at church
Of God’s love and His laws.
But when came life’s sea change,
I was the little child no longer,
But mother and cook,
Who shared with my husband
Responsibility as caretakers
And rule-givers for our children.
We took them to church,
And we taught them of God’s love and laws.
I hoped that they, like me,
Would have good memories of childhood.
Not all things change—
For all the years of childhood and beyond,
From days carefree to days care-filled,
God’s hand has been upon me
To guide me and protect me
And, most of all, assure me,
I am His beloved child.
