“Hey Barbara, are you ready?” Jenna’s smiling face waited for my response.
I glanced at her and rolled my eyes, that seemed to speak volumes as she walked off to the destination, her laughter echoing in the corridor.
Gathering the necessary items needed for the weekly farce. With great reluctance, I stood, and then slowly walked out of my office.
Lord, I know you walk with me, and go before me, so once again, I surrender to Your will and ask You give me the words to say, help me to be an example of Your light and Your doctrine, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Immediately upon entering the conference room my nostrils flared at the numerous and overpowering scents in the air. A combination of onion and garlic bagels intermingled with rose scented perfume, and piney overpowering masculine cologne. I took the seat at the head of the long conference table. My cup of black coffee seemed to be my only friend.
“Dr. Larson, if I may open the meeting.”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Well, the meeting of the ACLU will now be called to order. At our last meeting we left off with a complaint that defied the constitutional rights of certain employees. They filed a complaint about an announcement in our company bulletin that said, and I quote,‘Memorial Day Picnic will be held on the grounds of Holy Hills Park, please bring family and friends, and join us for a fun day from morning to evening. We hope to see you there.’ unquote.”
I took a deep breath. “And, this complaint was filed by one person?”
“Yes, Dr. Larson, one employee who is highly offended.”
“And why is this person highly offended?”
“Because of the name of the place, and of course, it being held there.”
“So, out of one thousand employees, we have one person who takes a strong aversion to the, um…name of the place, and this is cause to put in a complaint and ignore the majority due to a minority. Is that about right?”
“Yes, Dr Larson, this person is an atheist, and objects to the grounds. It also has a cross on the property that this person is horrified to see.”
“Yeah, this person hasn’t seen anything yet…just wait until they meet their Savior.” I didn’t realize I spoke aloud.
“Excuse me?”
“Oh sorry….Well, we’ve looked into this and the board has decided not to cancel our annual picnic. Instead, we will hold it at Holy Hills, as planned, but also have one at the opposite side of the park for those who object to our original destination.”
“What’s the name of the place Dr. Larson? I’m not familiar with any other place there on Holy Hills.”
I waited a long time to respond, as I shuffled my papers.
“The name of the place is Sepulchre Valley. I think it’ll make everyone happy. Those who wish to attend Holy Hill shall, and those who want to go to Sepulcher Valley, they're free to do so. Therefore, it’s a matter of choice. So, all those in favor of calling this meeting to a close, say Aye.”
A collective
Smiling, and relieved that the meeting was over, I walked back to my office.
When I entered my office, I immediately glanced at the slingshot on my desk there to remind me of my Giants along the way, and how God never disappoints.
