Finding one’s own bitty toes
And grabbing onto Mama’s nose
Then seeing wonders here and there
With new surprises everywhere
Next learning how to crawl and walk
To feed oneself and start to talk
Age two—showing rebellion:
“No” for naps or going to bed
Keeping parents awake instead
“No” for eating carrots and peas
“No” for saying “thanks” and “please”
“No, no, no”—the “terrible two’s”
For anything that they don’t choose
Age three—having fun:
Playing on the floor with toys
Liking best the ones with noise
Building things they can make
At parties with ice cream and cake
Learning rules for being good
Growing into personhood
Age four—Using imagination:
Digging to China with a spoon
Grabbing a star and touching the moon
Believing “once upon a time”
With toads and princesses in rhyme
Where dogs can talk and cats can fly
And reindeer race across the sky
