"Danny's eating worms - come and see," begged Connie, splaying her freckled face to the screen. She looked so crazy funny, I almost throw up my oatmeal. Nothing I like better than oatmeal with way too much brown sugar and butter on top - don't mix. When I grow up I will eat as much as i want, like ice cream and root beer floats.
Spitting and giggling with an oatmeal stuffed mouth, I hollered to Mommy "I'm going outside to play with Connie. We're going to have so much", oh oh - our dog jumped up to eat the rest of my breakfast, "Rusty's on the table again, can he come out too?"
I hope today is a better day than yesterday, Yesterday mommy cried. I think sometimes Mommy wants me away from home. She cries. She says she doesn't cry, but her face gets so splotchy wet, tears pouring out of her horribly huge red eyes. She pushed me away, sniffling "Go, go - have fun, forget about me - I'll be alright."
Last night Mommy and daddy had another big fight. He slammed her hand in the door, and she - crying and laughing ran into my bedroom and threw herself on my junk-filled bed. I was so afraid she would scold me again, but she didn't seem to notice the disaster I caused.
Today is a much better day. Daddy went out to the big smoking factory this morning to work with sparking hot metals. We always worry he will burn his hands. Mommy, feeling better, smiled so pretty and kissed
him big time. shooing me and Rusty to play outside with Connie. I wanted to watch Dannie chew worms. He really didn't - he just pretends to.
What a silly boy. Glad I'm not a boy. I took one look and slipped down to roll in freshly cut grass. The smell and taste - perfection as I watched a jet fire overhead - wishing I was in it.
I do have an awful habit of trying to run away from home. Once I pedaled my tricycle such a long way to see the Cleveland Indians, until someone stopped me to tell me they weren't really Indians. Phooey. I really got it when I got home. I was kinda glad that daddy yelled at me instead of at mommy.
Mommy is fantastic when she has a happy day. She throws sheets across the clotheslines so we can eat under a tent. She brings sweet lemonade and chocolate chip cookies she just made. She even sits in our sandbox with us and pretends she is a big overgrown kid. She laughs, screeches and loudly sings with us, making the porch-sitting neighbor ladies smile. These are the happy times.
Right now she is baking her best chocolate cake with 7-minute frosting for Daddy when he comes home for lunch. I hope he comes home and is happy that mommy did that for him. Most often he just watches old boring shows on television and drinks out of the pretty brown bottle with the four roses on it, until he falls asleep. They fight when he does that, using words I would get my mouth washed out with soap for.
Today daddy likes mommy's cake and even mushy kisses her. This will be a happy day. Maybe tomorrow we could have a picnic lunch under the clouds, and see who can find the funniest shapes. I will pray we find angels in the beautiful clouds.
