“Hey Mia, here we are again. It seems like we just said goodnight have a great weekend!”
I nodded to my co-worker, “Jenny, time flies everywhere but here! This factory job is tedious.”
“Yeah, looking at wheelchairs all day in an assembly line is totally depressing. My fingers at the end of the day are so stiff, I find it hard to open and close my hand.”
“I know. Thank goodness we have a job at least, huh?”
I quickly glanced at the rusty wall clock above our table. It seemed to keep pace with a snail’s journey on a bumpy garden path. I smiled to my co-worker before putting silent head phones on. However, it barely helped shield my ears against the clanging, banging, symphony that reverberated eight hours of the day.
I’ll get through the day eventually and be heading home to my two little fur babies. Yes, only 7 hours and 53 minutes to go, before I’m home free.
The wheelchair stopped at my station. I checked to make sure the wheels were securely in place. My job seemed so insignificant, but I knew each of us served a purpose in this workplace. The ensemble of co-workers made the production of wheelchairs come together, each perfectly synchronized, with one purpose, to give some faceless individual a chair.
These wheelchairs weren’t the ordinary type. They were standing wheelchairs. Standing, which comes easy to people not needing an assist of such a chair, is a sobering thought.
This job…It’s kind of like God’s assembly here on earth. We all have a job to do, no matter how big, or how small, yet we’re all together for a unique purpose.
I was glad it was time for our first morning break. As I walked to the employee’s lunch room, I could hear the marketing slogan for our chairs blasting through the overhead speakers.
"Shepherd’s Chairs are not one size fits all; it’s tailored and custom fit for body dimensions and physical conditions. Our chairs are built to “float” into position with patented balance technology that will keep everyone safe in virtually any position.
We can further meet needs depending on the environment. For example, if a chair is needed for rugged outdoor use, we can do a heavier construction and off road tires & wheels!
Our dedicated professional staff focuses on attention to detail, innovative technology, and complete customer satisfaction, so we can continue to set the bar for power wheelchair companies everywhere.
The physical benefits of being able to stand are plentiful. Sitting for long periods of time may cause the joints and muscles to stiffen. Standing allows the muscles to get stretched and exercised, decreasing the amount of stiffness one experiences in joints and muscles.
Pressure sores occur from constant pressure on one area of the body. Being able to stand up in a wheelchair helps distribute weight and improve healing. Changing posture helps the blood circulate around the body. Sitting in one position causes the blood to stagnate and reduce circulation.
Well-being is dramatically increased by using a standing wheelchair. Being on “the same level” when talking, or communicating with others, while allowing eye contact, or the ability to pose for photographs, hugs, and much more, is rewarding for individuals, thereby enabling a higher quality of life…”
I was bone tired and began to feel sorry for myself when Mr. Jorgensen’s voice, our boss, interrupted woeful thoughts. “All employees’ please report to the loading station, immediately.”
There at the loading station, was our chair replete with a red bow on the seat. Mr. Jorgensen’s speech was short, and to the point, thanking us for our hard work. And, then something we didn’t expect happened. He introduced a man who won a personalized wheelchair.
“Now, I’d like you to personally witness the joy of seeing the face of someone who will be using our chair. I have the distinct honor of introducing you to “Mr. Walters, a retired Navy war veteran.”
We watched as he hugged his wife while standing up. The thunderous applause lasted a long time. I brushed tears away as I made my way back to the assembly line.
That moment illuminated within my soul…
