Frost has hardened fertile ground,
When winter’s piercing chill takes hold
Not much sign of life around,
Presents a picture to my soul
Image simple yet profound;
In this scenario behold
Christianity frost-bound.
The trees with sparkling frost for leaves
Twinkle in the pallid glow
Icicles adorn the eaves
The roof-tops gleam with snow;
In such display my heart perceives
An alluring passing show
Which though it pleases yet it grieves—
In heat ’twill melt and go.
I urge you saints of God arise!
Thaw out beneath His Light!
Cast off religion’s frigid guise
Put frozenness to flight;
His Word of truth will make you wise
His Spirit give delight
Beyond what learned men surmise
At rest in His Son-light.
Our souls need Son-light’s glowing blaze
Preventing winter chill;
Though pretty, frost’s crisp sparkling rays
Are just a charming frill.
Awake my soul ‘neath Heaven’s gaze
And know the Father’s will
My lips declaring thanks and praise
Dispelling winter chill!
