“Warm-up stretches, Maggie. Come on, you should do some. It’s what professional athletes do?”
“Oh, so now we’re professionals, huh? Haven’t even gone on our first walk. I hate to say this, but you look like a kitten swatting at a ball of yarn. Or having a seizure.”
“Don’t start with me, Maggie. If we’re going to make this get-healthy thing work, you can’t be stepping on my nerves.”
“Humph! You are a thorn in my flesh. I don’t know why I hang out with you.” Maggie reached her arms over her head and made grunting sounds. “There. I stretched.”
“You hang out with me ‘cause you love me. Admit it. Your life would be boring without me.” Sylvia tugged at her sweatshirt that had crept up over her belly with all her stretching.
“Boring? Don’t delude yourself. Forty years of friendship with you has taken a toll on my mental health. Since our college days. Mercy sakes, weren’t we lookers then? Now our husbands, God rest their souls, wished we looked like that again.” Maggie patted her perfectly coifed hair.
“God rest their souls? Our husbands aren’t dead. Old, certainly. Dead in some areas. But still breathing. Talk about healthy, you should’ve heard Cliff when I handed him a smoothie this morning for breakfast. ‘Green diarrhea? You’re serving me green poo? Honey, where’s my bacon and eggs and toast?’ His eyes haven’t opened that wide since his fortieth birthday when I told him we were having twins. I told him he needs to unclog his arteries. He asked to see my doctor’s diploma since I seemed to know about clogged arteries. Good thing I love that man, ‘cause he can be a real smart-mouth sometimes.” Sylvia sighed and tugged at her sweatshirt again.
“You tried that spinach-kale recipe, I take it. I made one, too, and John liked it just fine. Of course, I put vanilla ice cream in mine. Are we gonna get started on this walk or not? If the sun gets any brighter, I’m gonna sweat out my fresh hair-do.” Maggie patted her hair again.
“Vanilla ice cream? You put vanilla ice cream in your smoothie? What’s the point of making a healthy smoothie, then? And why would you get your hair done just before we start our exercise routine? So, okay, let’s get started. Heaven help us all if you should ruin your precious hair-do.” Sylvia shot a scathing look at Maggie before starting on the walk.
“Wait.” Maggie huffed, and caught up to Sylvia, who was pumping her arms back and forth as she walked.
After a few minutes, Maggie stopped. “Sylvia, stop for a minute. I’m out of breath.”
Sylvia stopped and walked the few step back to Maggie. “I’m out of breath, too. Whew. We are really out of shape. I’m so glad we decided to do something to improve our health.”
Maggie’s breath was wheezing. “I declare, I think I have asthma. Tell me again why we are doing all of this. Because, honestly, right now, I just want to plop my out-of-shape body on a lounge chair and drink a mocha Frappuccino and eat a dozen donuts.”
“We want to improve our health so we can live to see our grandchildren grow up. And I rebuke your mention of donuts. You know glazed donuts are my weakness, Maggie. Well, so is chocolate cake. And white chocolate mocha with double whipped cream. Coconut cream pie. Grrrr! You just had to get me started, didn’t you?”
“Don’t blame me for your guilty cravings. Why is it always my fault? For the record. I hate coconut cream pie. I hate anything coconut. I don’t see how I can be friends with anyone who loves coconut like you do.” Maggie crossed her arms over her ample bosom and frowned.
Sylvia didn’t say anything at first. She just stared back at Maggie. Then she grinned, then burst out laughing. Once her laughter subsided, she said, “Do you realize we sound like an old married couple with our yammering at each other? And, my friend, your hair still looks fabulous.”
Maggie linked arms with Sylvia. “Enough walking for today. How far did we go?”
“Maybe one-twentieth of a mile. Or less. Let’s go to Starbucks. We can start our goal to a healthier lifestyle tomorrow. Ice cream in the smoothie, huh? I think I’ll try that tomorrow. But something without the color green.”
