I make petition for God’s help
As I begin a day of teaching,
And I enjoy the sights of seasons’ changing face.
Crepe myrtle shrubs, the final breath of summer,
Still thrive with blossoms of white
Amid varying shades of pink and palest lavender,
While fading rows of flowers
Wilt and droop from days of punishing sun.
Fall brings a burst of flaming orange and red
With gold and bronze and brown
To leaves of oaks and maples
Alongside stalwart firs and pines,
Holding tightly to green needles.
Winter’s trees with denuded limbs
Stand forlorn in bitter cold
Till snowflakes gather to cover their naked branches
And coat the countryside
With luminescent white.
Windshield wipers are spring’s rhythmic reminder
That trees will return to greenest garb
And an enchantment of flowers
Will bloom in a melody
Of riotous colors.
On the commute from school to home,
I thank God for His help
And for the beauty of His creation
I enjoy in the sights of seasons’ changing face.
