Juicy steaks on the backyard grill,
Where Dad stands, fork in hand, nearby,
Sweat dripping from his chin.
Clouds of smoky aroma rising
Make a perfect dinner call
For the family to gather round,
Grab a plate, and head inside
To add tossed green salad
And a baked potato
With crinkly, crusty jacket,
Melted butter in the center.
Sizzling . . .
Tender chicken in the frying pan,
Where Mom in her bib apron
Hops back to prevent hot grease
From popping on her arms.
She turns the pieces, one by one,
Till each is a rich golden brown—
Crunchy on the outside,
Succulent within.
Mom sets them all on a big platter
Amid a tantalizing circle of dishes:
Mashed potatoes and gravy,
Fresh green beans and corn on the cob,
Slices of rich ripe tomatoes,
And made-from-scratch flaky biscuits.
Sizzling . . .
My heart with the memories of home,
Where my siblings and I together
Sat around the table with Mom and Dad—
The knowledge we were loved
As delicious as the dinners.
