She clicked onto 'Love Guaranteed' and looked at her list of may-bes. Fifteen men's faces stared out at her, fifteen eligible men. But first she'd look through the new posts.
As she clicked on 'New Today' her eyes locked straight onto Marty Monro, 51, with a face like George Clooney's.
Forget the other fifteen. This is the guy!
Lucy's eyes lit up and her hands shook as she clicked on his profile. 'Widower of two years. No children. Accountant. Owns his own house. Enjoys music and drama...' He seemed a perfect match. She read on.
'Speaks three languages – English, Spanish and Portuguese. Looking for mature, kind-hearted woman with a good sense of humour.'
That's me! No doubt about it! Marty and Lucy Monro – it sounds right. Now, slow down Lucy!
She sipped her coffee and nibbled the cookie. She opened up the profile she had prepared about herself: '49. Divorced. No children of her own but loves children.' She deleted the last phrase; he didn't have children anyway. 'Good sense of humour. Legal receptionist. Speaks English and French.' She changed that to 'Speaks two languages'.
Lucy had been on her own for a few years now and even before that she might as well have been. Darren had pretty much ignored her for the last ten years anyway. He had turned out no better than Tony, her first husband. Funny how she'd chosen someone so similar.
Oh well, that's all water under the bridge now. Time for another attempt at love, and Marty could just be the one.
She uploaded her profile and checked the box next to Marty's. Her photo was four years old but she looked very attractive. Now she just had to wait for Marty's reply. She headed off to do her Saturday shopping.
Back home, Lucy unpacked her groceries, put the kettle on and switched on her computer.
Don't be ridiculous, Lucy. It's only an hour since you posted your reply. Marty won't have even seen it yet.
As the computer flickered on she clicked on the 'Love Guaranteed' site. A blue star indicated a reply and her heart thumped as she clicked on the star. Yes! It was from Marty Monro.
Dear Lucy. I was thrilled to read your reply. As I read your profile I could hardly contain my excitement. We have so much in common. And my heart beat faster when I looked at your beautiful face. Let me tell you a bit more about myself.
I live in San Francisco. I head up an accountancy firm. Since my wife died I have become a bit of a loner, though I love company. I feel I am ready for a new relationship, with the right lady.
That's enough for now, dear Lucy. I am so looking forward to getting to know you well. With admiration, Marty.
Lucy's coffee sat untouched while she typed a reply. She told Marty about her work, about London, and how she would love to go to San Francisco.
Messages flew back and forth across the Atlantic. They exchanged more photos of themselves and their extended families. Lucy was falling more and more in love. She couldn't believe her luck at finding such a loving, thoughtful, and handsome man.
Then, four weeks later Lucy opened a new message: Dearest Lucy, I don't know how to say this. Her heart missed a beat. What was he going to say?
I have, very unfortunately, lost a lot of money on the stock market and got behind with my house payments. I have three days to come up with $20,000, or my house will default to the finance company. I wonder if you could lend me some money to tide me over. I can send you my bank details for a direct deposit. I know you have a heart of gold. I will be able to pay you back within a couple of months. Your loving, Marty.
Lucy didn't want to believe what her good sense was telling her. She desperately wanted Marty to be who she had hoped he was - honest, loving, and in love with her. But the warning bells were ringing. With tears running down her cheeks she deleted Marty from her computer and her life.
