looks with disapproval at my cake
stabbing a finger, showering me with spittle
he shouts, “You weren’t there!”
a waitress hovers
unwilling to commit herself to
landing in our altercation
a clear “Mayday!” signal on her face
I glance across the river
to the place where I wasn’t
Sunday, soup and sandwiches
a church project to feed the poor
yellow split pea, lentil and vegetable
leek and potato or butternut squash
wholesome and delicious
a fixed meal in a week of hunger
invited to sit, he accepts a cup of coffee and
picks over Sunday’s absence
a locked door and no explanation
just the rain drumming on the pavement
I try for absolution and picture the rota
I wasn’t there. It wasn’t my turn
he doesn’t understand rotas but
turns up every week for soup
carrot and coriander, tomato and apple
chicken noodle or spicy parsnip
nourishing and tasty
a fixed meal in a week of hunger
he drags the conversation on
to food bank vouchers
the police sitting on his doorstep and
an ex- fiancé accusing him of stalking
knowledge creeps upon me
it was always more than soup
he needs to know I have his back, that
I will stand with him in the rain
a locked door and no explanation
says that I won’t
