a humble tumbling to the knees
a desperate question
words scald and spill
“What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
safe ground, it appears
commandments recited,
a tick in the box - done them
a pat on the back, perhaps
but something troubles -
an elusive thought
Jesus’ words, weighed and measured
shred all other possibilities
a gauntlet thrown down
only one thing left
an exchange, if you will,
treasure that glitters for Treasure that bleeds
all things to be sold and proceeds given away
nothing to catch the eye in a backward glance
the releasing of a slave - to follow Him
the security of wealth smothers the shoulders
like an impenetrable cloak
to warm the heart of a rich man? or
the incertitude of poverty
which covers nothing and
strips a man defenceless?
the heart is exposed and
disappointment is raw
there’s a sad walking away
knowledge grates
there can never be an unknowing
an unspeaking of words in the ear – impossible,
treasure is forever tarnished as
the delusive delight of the heart
shuts the door to heaven
but
the challenge still remains
