Left him heartbroke and driftin' out west.
I growed up in saloons, playin' cards, hearin' tunes,
But I knowed my pa gave it his best.
I weren't hungry nor cold, but I'd always been told
That them preachers would spoil our fun.
I had learnt when to hold, and learnt when to fold,
And what mattered in life, that I won.
But was curious I got, one July burnin hot,
When a man came around with a dare,
'Cause he said if I went out that night to his tent
I'd find riches that wouldn't compare.
Nearly left hoppin mad when I found I'd been had.
He was just an ol' preacher, but then
He was startin' to tell, all 'bout Heaven and Hell,
And 'bout some way to be borned again.
Now I'd never thought much 'bout life, death and such,
But I sure did start thinkin' that night.
When he asked who would pray to get saved, right away
I went forward to get my heart right.
Well my pa lost his cool and he called me a fool
When I told him that Jesus saved me.
"Boy, were there a God, then you'd still have a ma.
You'll be back here soon, just wait and see!"
"I may not know a lot 'bout God yet, but I'm not
Gonna gamble that I have no soul.
Now you wished I'd forget that you taught me "no bet"
When the odds are against me to fold?"
