While eager to sit and with God get engaged
Equipped with his Bible, the porch swing gets squeaking
Then acknowledgements to Him he began speaking
I’m a-feelin’ Lord, my trip’s ‘bout to end
Wish I’d learnt it sooner--that You was my friend
What a dif’rent di-rection, if back then we’d met
‘Stead of me trippin’ traps that led to regrets
So young and green, like a sprout poking’ dirt
Baited traps were my vice, causin’ good folks to hurt
Gamblin’ halls, pretty girls dressed in their shame
I enjoyed the carousing’-- liked being untamed
Each crossroad encountered led me astray
I made the choices and partook in foul play
Winkin’ at Satan paved roads of corruption
The sum of my youth equaled varied destruction
A tourist of sorts on the trip of my lifetime
‘Till out of the blue someone threw me a lifeline
Years of hard livin’ visibly etched ‘cross my face
When a sweet-natured woman showed me some grace
Her smile was shy as she gestured her hand
Needin’ help from her carriage--hoped I’d understand
So’s I got her down, tipped my hat, turned to leave
When this delicate gal gives a tug on my sleeve
She won my heart, this darlin’ angel you sent
She read The Good Book, got me to repent
She’s never been preachy, just lives by example
While the love she bestows is in excess of ample
Thank you Lord for each gentle nudge
For assuring’ me that I have a fair judge
For ev’ry provision that helped me live right
Now I’m ready to go if You want me tonight
