This past year had been one of heartache and turmoil for Cindy. James had come to her months ago and asked her for a divorce, and the reason was he had met another woman and thought he was in love with her.
"I’m so sorry, Cindy. I haven’t felt like I had a wife in a long time. I feel like you left me when you took your high powered position with the company you work for. I don’t mean to hurt you or the children, but it just happened.” James said, with tears in his eyes.
At first, Cindy begged and pleaded with James to stay with his family and reconsider. Cindy didn’t believe in divorce. She was of the mind that couples stayed married throughout their lives, raised their children properly, and grew old together. She loved James with all her heart, and didn’t want to break their family apart.
As time went on, however, Cindy realized that James was unhappy. After counseling with their church minister, she agreed to give him a divorce on the condition they have one last family vacation, for the sake of the children.
James agreed, and so this evening they would all be leaving for Walt Disney World to spend the last of their time together as a family. The children, unaware of their parent’s situation, were looking forward to seeing Mickey Mouse and riding a giant roller coaster.
Later, on the trip to Orlando, James seemed like his old self. He laughed and sang songs with the children and counted cows throughout the countryside. Cindy hid her tears behind big sunglasses, because she knew it would all come to an end.
When they reached their destination, they all had a fabulous time, and James and Cindy enjoyed the adventure as much as they could, under the circumstances. Cindy laughed as the children romped with Mickey and joyously rode the rides. For five days, the Mims family was together, and what lay ahead for them seemed almost forgotten. Almost.
On the way home, James never saw the drunk driver when he crossed the median and hit their car on its front left side. It all happened so fast, and as the car tumbled down a hill on the side of the road, his only words were, “Jesus, help us!”
The next thing James knew, they were all lying on the hillside, bleeding and battered. They were all alive, but Cindy was unconscious and blood poured from her chest. Becky and Jimmy both had bruises, but miraculously, no broken bones.
James stumbled over to where Cindy lay as he pleaded to God for her life. Seeing her lifeless body, he cried, “Live, Cindy, live, and we will work all this out.”
Cindy was taken by helicopter to the nearest hospital, and James and the children both went by ambulance. The car was completely totaled, and was towed away. James, Becky and Jimmy were all checked out at the hospital and released that same day, but Cindy lapsed into a two day coma. When she woke, James was by her bedside.
“Cindy, when I realized how close I came to losing you for good, I knew at once how very much I still love you. This week has shown me how much you and my children mean to me. If you can ever forgive me, please give me another chance.’
As Cindy lay in a hospital bed for several weeks,, she thought about James and about how much she had neglected him while she made a name for herself with the company she worked for. She was very ambitious, and her job and the children took all of her time, leaving James out in the cold.
When the time came for Cindy’s release from the hospital, James came to pick her up. With tears in her eyes, she only had a few words to say to James. “I love you, and I forgive you. Can you ever forgive me?”
James smiled and replied, ‘Let’s go home.”
