Oh, really?
‘Depression,’ whether thinking of the word, pecking it out on my keyboard or saying it aloud, it carries great weight. Excuse me for interjecting a bit of a play on words. It not only carries weight in significance, it becomes deadweight upon the shoulders and spirit of the despondent. I know. Been there, done that.
I have heard depression described as a dark cloud. True to a point but clouds are seemingly light and normally drift away. On the other hand, to one inflicted with clinical depression it becomes a heavy weight. I’m an avid reader of dictionaries; let me share the definition of depression.
“1. a depressing or being depressed. 2. a hollow or low place. 3. low spirits; dejection. 4. a decrease in force, activity, etc. 5. [na] (Webster’s New World Dictionary)."
Taking a step back, depress…
“1. to press down. 2. to sadden. 3. to weaken 4.[na] (Webster’s New World Dictionary).”
I hope you discern the progression from depress to depression. Visualize a lump of clay; someone places their thumb into the pliable mass and pushes downward. Any onlooker would agree that there is a noticeable depression in the clay long after the person lifted the weight of their thumb.
Next, imagine you are that lump of clay, saddened, weak, feeling hollow inside. You sink lower and lower, isolating yourself and avoiding activities that you once enjoyed. Depression takes root deep down into your soul; yet, you masterfully cope and carry on a charade. Acquaintances query you on how you are doing and you tell them what they expect to hear.
“Very well, thank you.”
We are never without hope. Weary and depressed souls receive solace and renewed strength in the LORD.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the LORD has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified (Isaiah 61:1-3 NKJ).”
