It’s still hard to believe that everything went wrong. I am unable to rationalize their choice in my mind. Still I’ve witnessed many unwise choices.
For now I’m content; guard the East Gate, report intruders, be alert.
Suddenly inky smog drifts towards me. My lungs wretch from the acidity.
“The Fallen,” I whisper.
Looking around I see a grotesque form slithering toward me through the thinning smoke.
“Ahron,” he hisses,”how the General has fallen! Relegated to a measly watchman.”
“Urijah*”
“That is NOT my NAME!”
He rises high. Jet-black leathery wings reach upward without taking flight.
His sudden outburst results in a thick acrid cloud obliterating the sun. I shiver.
“I am not …” he sputters, “His…fire”
He struggles to refer to Creator, even in an abstract way.
“I am Aviur. The Father of Fire!”
“Whatever you call yourself, what is your business here?,” I clutch the shaft of my flaming sword a little tighter.
“None of yours.” He turns sharply and slithers in retreat.
Leaving the sword in it’s sheathe, I reach for my bow. Readying an arrow, I pull back and release it toward the heavens. Michael must know immediately.
The Archangel’s answer arrives in the form of Xola**. He lands sprightly to my left. Buff wings quickly tuck in. Ebony skin shines as one who stands in the Presence.
“I came as quickly as I could.” His eyes dart around seeking the Fallen.
“It was what is left of Urijah.”
There is heaviness in my voice. He was a lieutenant under me before the Great Betrayal.
Xola places his right hand on my shoulder. Power surges through my being, strengthening me.
“Ahron, my General,” Xola’s loyalty and bravery throughout the Great Betrayal earned him the right to stand in the Presence.
And though Aviur chided me for a demotion, I know my assignment is an honour.
“Let not this Fallen creature steal your Peace.”
I entwine my arm in his. “Thank you, my friend.”
I breathe in deeply, “He was seething such foul fire, such anger, such rage …”
Xola shakes his head.
“I am deeply concerned for the Created,” I say.
“We cannot interfere.”
I sigh, “Yes, I know.”
“The Creator has walked with, and talked to, the First Born. It’s his choice.”
Choice.
Free Will.
It’s already proved fatal.
I cannot shake the dread we felt at the loss of the first life.
A lamb. Such an innocent creature.
When his blood soaked the red clay shock waves shook the Earth.
“AAAHHH!”
An inhumane screech fills the air!
Xola and I fight to remain upright as the ground beneath our feet trembles violently.
Aviur crashes down in front of us. There’s blood dripping from his mouth. He seems to have grown larger.
Xola and I draw our swords.
“You have FAILED! This experiment has FAILED! I, the Father of Fire, have triumphed!”
“What are you jabbering about Fallen one?” Xola brandishes his sword.
“Cain has crossed over!”
He arches his mutilated head back and screams. “He belongs to me! My fire burns in his belly. I have unleashed, though him, all rage against the Creator!”
Aviur’s eyes burrow into my mind. All I see is red.
“He. Has. Killed. His. Brother.”
Each word is like a well placed knife to the soul.
Before we can react Aviur launches his misshapen being from Earth crossing back into the Pit.
“Able … Able … no!”
I fall to my knees weeping. I was sure after the Great Betrayal no more tears could escape my eyes. Then came the Great Rebellion. Now Rage has entered the Earth and Death’s rule is fortified.
Xola drops to his knees, sword on the ground.
Moments pass.
When we open our eyes we’re surrounded by the Mighty One’s army. The Son Himself is present. He steps forward, flaming sword raised high.
“Fear not, loyal servants of the Most High!. Death and Sin will be defeated. Rage. Anger. Even murder cannot stand against Me! All will be redeemed!”
Xola and I stand in unity with Heaven’s armies. Swords high. Eyes lifted to the only Source of Life.
No remnant of Aviur’s demented fire can remain in such company.
*Urijah - God's fire
