Something to delight in, appealing to the soul,
Yet something that’s outside us, involuntary, free,
Beyond our domination—but will we let it be?
First parents in the garden, in paradise unflawed,
By excellence surrounded, the perfect works of God;
From outside comes the tempter proposing greater yet,
Forbidden fruit delicious; what did their fall beget?
Idyllic Eden forfeit, inherit cursed earth,
Death and pain and labour our portion now from birth;
Yet beauty’s still reflected, a balm to soothe the soul,
A tonic to our senses— but self pursues control.
Discontent beholders, we covet, crave and scheme
To bring a thing of beauty beneath our lust’s regime;
Selfishness the hallmark of people far and wide
We war and fight and battle to satisfy our pride.
The evidence surrounds us, in murder, rape and theft,
Unborn lives discarded—a world of hope bereft?
Forbidden fruit’s fruition—apocalypse in sight,
Foreboding fearsome darkness—approach of endless night.
Mankind has no solution as we are victims all
Self-centeredness our master, the product of the fall;
But God provides a Saviour—Immanuel as man,
Mystery majestic—redemption’s perfect plan.
Without a blemish, sinless, He conquered Satan’s wiles
His perfect life contrasted the lives by sin defiled;
In Christ alone’s the answer to heal the lustful soul—
Repent, believe and trust Him—Submit to His control.
