“Hmmm,” I said to myself, “I wish I’d thought of that one when you were a little girl!"
Paul said in Colossians 4:6: Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned, as it were, with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to everyone. (NIV)
There are so many ways, in addition to whining and complaining, that our talk is peppered with words other than the salt of grace. The fire of the pepper in angry or hurtful words to others can leave indelible marks. In his poem “Primer Lesson,” Carl Sandburg referred to them as “proud words” that are like long boots, hard boots that can’t hear you when you try to call them back.
Other conversation displeasing to God includes: swearing, lying, gossip, and criticism.
Psalm 147:1 declares that the sacrifice of praise is more pleasing to the Lord than any ceremonial sacrifice. Surely, praise offered to God has the very best seasoning.
With the salt of grace, we can respond to others with words of forgiveness, of encouragement, of kindness, and of instruction in righteousness.
If instead of using peppery words of evil, we would always speak with words of grace, God would never have need to say to us, “I can’t hear you.”
