Of another lengthy night
Heralding, with patterned promise
A dawn proclaiming daytime bright.
Broken, lost, a waiting prisoner
Viewed, with heavy heart, the birth
Of a day about to happen,
Hours ordained: his last on earth.
A life recalled, black recollection:
Theft and crime and evil acts,
Twisting devious plans and tactics
That further ran on evil’s tracks.
Waiting tunnels dark and winding,
Burrows deep with no escape,
A warren, lair, a den of darkness -
The pattern of his life took shape.
Could a tunnel get much darker?
Arrest and trial, guilt pronounced.
The flame of life so near-extinguished
With the sentence thus announced.
Deserved and merited his ending:
A waiting cross, upon a hill,
Crime’s reward was crucifixion,
The tunnel, yes, got darker still.
His own despair was mirrored clearly
In a fellow-robber’s face,
Till, astounded, they beheld One
Also sentenced with disgrace.
But from this One came fast outpouring,
Love and power, who could this be?
Who could ask His watching listeners,
‘Weep for yourselves, don’t weep for me.’
In this Man, though bruised and bloodied,
One robber caught the fragrance of
A sinless life, so clean and spotless,
Divinity wrapped up in love.
Here, his tunnel bonds were loosened,
Here, despite his death-bound flight,
He saw Hope glimmer, beckon, call him,
He saw, at last, a wondrous Light.
The sands of time were almost ended
As each hung dying on the tree,
One dying robber turned to Jesus,
And whispered ‘Lord, Remember Me.’
And with the Saviour’s wondrous promise
Of Paradise with Him that day,
All trace of tunnels, sin and darkness
Was swept immediately away.
