With faith in God all things are possible.
That's Jules Stalwart's motto. As super friendly captain of our grace ship Faith Works, he has guided us to remote hot spots of our galaxy far beyond the limits of all vain imagination. We've beamed aboard a wide variety of alien life forms, because to "creatively evangelize and disciple dull civilizations" forms the core of our missions statement. That's why we receive all sorts of seekers, rednecks and believers, regardless of sex, origin or skin color and urge them to get plugged into our crew.
Stalwart says there's nothing we can't do in Christ, no matter who we are. But as expansive as his vision is (the vision he got thirty years ago), he can be a bit close-minded.
You can't introduce a play or new tune, for example, if you're not a silver Fame Sing from Bandango. Flaming Serve-a-hols from Toilmuch fit in fairly easily, but golden Organize-Its exercise a stranglehold on fine arts and only dirt brown Boxheads from Elite Elect are deemed worthy to direct a class or participate in any type of "power" ministry.
"The Faith, No Limits' man has everybody pegged and pigeon-holed," I whine as I stir circles in my mocha above a square gray table some black-and-white striped Techno-Whizz designed. "He gravitates to stars from Mars and he can't see the rut in which we're shut."
My best friend Charity, who sits across from me, agrees. "Faith Works has been orbiting a moon called Nowhere Fast for several light years now. It's a vicious cycle and it never seems to end." Her violet fingers twirl a chocolate donut. She takes a bite.
"But with a little faith," she offers between munches, "we can change the atmosphere."
"You mean, find a way to talk to Stalwart, get him to see the rut for what it is and change it?" Sounds like a tall order.
"Why not? You're a Light Shift. It's your gift."
I stir more circles in my mocha. "I don't know. I've tried a million times to send a message. I want to clear his focus and help him understand: it's not more video announcements that we need. Or fancy advertisements. Or worn clichés. Or ten-step power point sermons recycled a hundred times until we find a way to fit inside his little box. What we need is acceptance and a chance to use our gifts the way we were created to. I've tried a rainbow streak of ways to show him what I mean, but he acts like I'm invisible."
Charity's emerald eyes sparkle like diamonds. "Precisely. Being invisible. That's the key to breakthrough. Don't you know by now? You don't have to be a Hoop Jumper from One-Size-Fits-All to get his ear. All you have to do is to move forward without fear."
I frown. "How is that possible?"
"Faith works through love, and love believes all things. God is perfect love. He casts out fear."
I raise my brows, demanding more specifics.
She winks. "I have a plan."
With stealthy feet I follow her down a maze of windy corridors that never seem to end. We finally come to a door labeled Sick bay. Doctor Sininsult, who guards the door, eyes Charity with disgust but doesn't even blink at me. I slip into the room without a sound as she argues with my friend.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to cure Miles Sparks of the Too-Lazy-To-See-You flu that's got him down."
"Sorry, I'm afraid that's just not possible. Only Elite Elects like me have what it diagnose and treat the terminally ill."
"Miles Sparks is chief of engineering. We need him to fix the fans. Besides, he's dying. What harm can it do?"
To make a long story short, Miles rejoices to have a visitor. He was beginning to think nobody cared about him, until I showed up. By the time Charity and Sininsult finish arguing, I've already called down the power. Spark gets healed, the captain gets wind of it, the fans get fixed, the air is cleared. We break out of our endless rut, and discover that when faith works through love, the possibilities are truly endless.
