Months of planning, expectation
over, daybreak dawns at last
on the great day – the waiting’s past;
the final countdown has begun ...
A distant chime, the clock strikes one.
Ten bridesmaids smile and line for duty
With the bride in radiant beauty,
Adjustments made, last minute bustling,
Swirling dresses, satin rustling.
All ready, nothing left to do?...
A distant chime, the clock strikes two.
The glowing bride in fine array
On this her glorious wedding day
Leads the procession through the town
Garbed in her finest bridal gown,
Glowing with joy, expectancy...
A distant chime, the clock strikes three.
And maidens ready take their stand
To accompany, with lamps in hand,
Prepared to wait - it wasn’t clear
At just what time the groom’d appear
But waiting was a fact for sure...
A distant chime, the clock strikes four.
It wasn’t plain to outward eyes
That just five of the girls were wise,
They’d thought ahead, they’d made their plans,
Lamp-oil supplies were in their hands,
Equipped for when the groom would arrive...
A distant chime, the clock strikes five.
The sun blazed brightly in the sky
Noon came and went, the hours passed by,
The girls grew drowsy, could not keep
Their eyes open, aah! - restful sleep,
Whilst unforeseen, hour, minute, ticks...
A distant chime, the clock strikes six.
The day draws on, the evening calls,
Skies darken, dim, as night-time falls.
Watchful alertness heavy lays
‘Neath blanket of a dreamy haze.
And distantly, the clock strikes seven,
Then eight, then nine, then ten, eleven.
The long awaited wedding day
had very nearly passed away,
When suddenly, to every ear,
There came the cry: ‘The bridegroom’s here.
Come out to meet him!’ Wondrous sight
Loud chimes of joy at clock’s midnight.
The radiant bride hurries and goes,
The bridesmaids to their feet arose,
They trimmed their lamps but five were scared
To find themselves quite unprepared,
No oil, no burning, beam of light
Just dead cold lamps, a tragic sight.
Five foolish girls rushed off to find
More oil – would they be left behind?
They raced in desperation, but
They were too late, the door was shut.
Despite their pleading protestation
They missed the wedding celebration.
Be watching, praying for the day
When this old earth will pass away,
The chiming clocks of earth and time
Forgotten in the joy sublime.
The wedding feast in glory bright,
The city of eternal light,
Throughout eternity will ring
With constant praise to Christ the King
