Suddenly, the master intervened. His voice was clear and firm.
“Leave her alone. Her heart is heavy, full of sorrow.”
Allowing the distraught woman to come near to him, he recalled the months and years passed.
He remembered the lovely and comfortable place of refuge that was provided for him – a room all his own, whenever he needed it. He remembered the meals prepared with care and served to him, satisfying his physical hunger, but also creating for him a warm welcome in their home. He loved this woman, her husband, and the miracle-child God had given them in the husband's old age.
Sensing the urgency in her voice, he sent the servant ahead to help the woman’s son. He himself would follow close behind, along with the mother. Her sad report was that the child was unresponsive, and that he had died in her arms. The man’s heart was breaking with her passionate, silent plea. Her deep faith in the face of tragedy was startling: that all was well, even in a seemingly hopeless situation.
Before they reached the home, the servant met him, reporting that it was too late, and nothing could be done, but his master brushed past him. He realized the child had been placed in the very room where he himself had spent many restful hours. He walked straight to the silent little form on the bed.
Just down the stairs, the mother waited. She knew the man of God. She also knew the power of the God of the man. Her husband sat quietly by her side.
From the death-filled atmosphere, a sudden sound burst forth.
“Achoo.” This was followed by another. “Achoo.” Then again…”Achoo…achoo…achoo…achoo…achoo.”
Seven sneezes from her tiny little boy brought unspeakable joy to this Shunammite woman who never doubted that all was well. Her faith in Elisha’s God and her service to him had taught her this deep truth. Her persistence in seeking out the Source of help in her helplessness had been rewarded with another miracle. Elisha called for her in the little upper room, and she rose to go. Her heart was filled with laughter as her widespread arms reached out to her son.
