Assembled neatly, like a tie;
A banner is hanging down my chest
To show where my allegiance lies—
I do not look like other men,
Religion has set me apart!
I hoard the homage I am due
Within the corners of my heart—
I live this pompous masquerade
Like an actor plays upon the stage;
You could not find a speck on this tie,
’Cause I’m the planet’s greatest sage.
But with this cloth restricting me
I cannot run about and play;
I walk to the beat of chanting chains
Wherever they beckon, I obey—
But when I see that smile you share
I wonder—is there something I’ve missed?
I hear you laugh as you taste the sky;
You wear your faith like a tender kiss—
You aren’t concerned with what others think,
But live like a child who’s been set loose—
I know that I can share your joy
If I but choose;
I’ll trade the stage for a faith that flies
And give away my gaudy noose.
