Human flesh instead of bread? Blood, not fruit juice? What can it really mean? Am I to be a cannibal? A carnivorous flesh-eater? A vampire?
I cry to God, "Feed me!" He cries back, "Feed on Me!"
What?! Did I hear correctly?
He must be kidding! This is a joke, right?
This is insane! I won't listen to Him!
He sounds dangerous and even evil! I shall flee from Him!
The Man of Mystery says, "Eat Me." He commands, "Drink My life essence, running red."
It is a banquet with blood, a feast of flesh.
I plead, "Give me cake, pie, cookies, pastries. Serve me potatoes, steak, pizza, lasagna. I'll even eat my vegetables! Anything but this deranged diet of yours, Lord!"
He holds out his hands. "Consume Me."
I take a bite. Chew. Don't spit it out--swallow it all! At first my tongue curls, my taste buds rebel. It's too much to ask. I can't do it! I won't do it!
How shall it feel, gnawing on Truth, sipping the living liquid of the Spirit? Might it be like a fire, warming every cold corner within me, melting my inner ice? Will it be as a flash flood coursing through my veins, filling with vitality every empty, dying place inside?
Dare I hope...believe...expect...this Man's Manna to satisfy my heart-hunger? Will His transfusion in fact transform? Is it possible that my arid, shriveling soul will truly never thirst again?
Once more I ask: What does it mean to dine on the Divine?
He answers, "Take Me in to the core of who you are. Digest My words. Be nourished by My everlasting presence. Sustain yourself with My goodness and My grace."
At last, in company with His ancient followers, I beg, "Lord, give me this Bread always."
Again He holds out His hands.
I will take this broken Loaf and give thanks. I will lift the cup of crimson and imbibe the Life therein.
I have chosen. This shall be my daily diet.
