Atop a grassy knoll
That was drenched in sunlight, warm and golden
Which filled a hungry soul—
The grass was like a carpet
That soothed my calloused toes,
A haven from the rocky roads
Which wander down below—
The hill was crowned with a wreath of pink
By a blooming cherry tree,
The scent of romance filled each blossom
With sweet insanity!—
The basket, full of delicacies:
A look, a touch, a kiss!
We savor each with brightened eyes
And taste eternal bliss—
And at the bottom, hidden wonders
Beyond the reach of words,
The tying of our lives together
With everlasting cords!—
Alas, it was not all as dreamed,
The picnic could not last;
The sun gave way to the cold of night,
And storms swept up from the past.
The grass contained some boulders
Within its gentle realm,
At times I still grow weary
When I am at the helm—
The blossoms of the cherry tree
Are often taken for granted:
The fragrant smells become commonplace
With which our hearts are scented—
And even the most tender moments
Do not endure forever,
Our selfishness rebuilds its walls
And cord by cord gets severed.
But still, on rainy days you find me here
Atop the grassy knoll;
The sun may not endure forever
But I will not let go.
I’ll take the grass with all its flaws,
That I might see your smile,
And hand-in-hand we’ll run with joy,
As free as any child—
I’ll breathe the scent of fragrant blossoms
Even when my heart is dull;
And as they die, they’ll bear new fruit,
And cherries will crown the hill!
I’ll savor every delicacy
And treasure every kiss—
Though bliss may not remain forever
There’s nothing as sweet as this.
Though love did not match every dream,
I know that I will keep it—
I want to share it all with you,
And that is love’s best secret.
