The ramparts scrape the sky;
I boast of towers eight feet thick,
And a gate without a key.
With blueprints laid out perfectly
I built my citadel,
To ward off any sight of sin
And guard my soul from hell.
I spurn all foes that wander near
With boiling pots of tar;
No speck within my brother’s eye
May dare approach my heart!
I think if I could hold my walls
Then I will be secure,
And if every foe is held at bay,
My heart is clean and pure—
If the best defense could keep my safe,
I’d have my guarantee;
But it is not the world outside
Who is my enemy!
The strongest walls won’t save my soul
From the treachery of sin;
While my eyes are fixed on those around me,
The danger lies within.
