Where reality and dreams are blurred
Where shuffling feet and muffled beep
Are the only noises to be heard—
Did he hear her speak a whispered word?
He has been on vigil night by night
Watching over her in silent prayer
Looking for some movement be it slight,
For the faintest twitch, some sign that might
Give his heart a lift, dispel despair.
Nodding off at times she comes to him
As the smiling girl he’d always known
In the joy filled times when both of them
Lived the outdoor life full of verve and vim—
Fleeting joy!--He wakes--the dream has flown.
She’s been comatose for months on end
And it breaks his heart to see her so,
His beloved wife, his dearest friend,
Every waking moment tries to spend
Here beside her bed—he hates to go.
Nightly speaks to her as though she hears
Tries to stir her mind with things well known,
No response, yet still he perseveres
Whispers sweet affections in her ears
Secret things once shared by them alone.
He grows weary, nods asleep again—
Eyes just close no matter how he tries—
Then like something triggers in his brain
There’s a change, a change he can’t explain
Wakes and sees slight flutter in her eyes.
Praise the Lord for such a precious sign
For restoring hope that she’ll be well
Let us pray this tumour is benign,
They back as one in God’s good time—
Final verse be as they both will tell.
