When he was off to war?
Did Leonidas long for rest
When his arms had gotten sore?
The legends of the heroes
Make the battles seem so smooth,
As if they could resolve a hundred wars
When they are in the groove—
But when I survey the battlefield
Such strength I cannot claim;
My humanness is weighing me down,
And I do not like the game!
If I must win to be a hero
And conquer every foe,
I fear I do not have the vigor
And cannot fit the role—
Yet the realms of greatness are not claimed
By drifting down a stream,
But by climbing up into the fray
When ’tis harder than it seemed.
A victory is purchased
With coins of blood and sweat,
Each dollar counted one by one
Until I pay my debt.
The moment I’m most tired
Is when a hero is made—
When I’m weary, broken, and at my worst
But I come to save the day.
