The words hit me hard. There was both comfort and terror in those words. Comfort that he would be in the hands of many skilled doctors and nurses, including one of the top doctors in his field, but terror at the thought that his condition was severe enough to warrant it.
"May I see him?"
The doctor looked at me with compassion. "Of course, but every second counts."
They wheeled A.J. out, and I found his hand. I prayed scripture over him.
"'...He is able... because He always lives to interceded for them.'"
A.J. fluttered his eyelids and squeezed my hand. He wasn't supposed to do that, was he? He was in a coma with no response. He wasn't even breathing on his own. Yet I saw it and felt it. I supposed if I'd asked, the doctor might have told me it was just a reflex. But I know better. His body may have been unresponsive, but his spirit was not.
After my husband and I arrived at the hospital, we discovered just how many doctors and nurses made up that "team." It was at least seventeen. The severity of A.J.'s situation was again impressed upon us. But we knew what to do. We got on our faces, prostrate, and prayed to the God of healing. Jehovah Rapha. While he was in the operating room, some friends joined us, and a group of six of us continued to pray scripture over A.J.
"'It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak...'"
Never had the verse "pray without ceasing" taken on such a literal meaning for us.
The surgeon came to the waiting room. "A.J. is out of surgery. We believe the surgery has been a success, but the next seventy-two hours or so will be critical."
I followed the doctor to the recovery room, trying to prepare myself. I walked into the room, and tried to find my precious son amid all the tubes and monitors.
The next few days were extremely difficult, but encouraging too, as we saw God's hand at work. He truly is the Great Physician.
A.J. opened his eyes less than forty-eight hours after surgery, and was even able to answer some "yes and no" questions.
One day later, it was clear that A.J. was fed up with this whole hospital business. I had to laugh, as I listened to him talk to his dad.
"You and Mom are just wasting your time here, because I'm fine."
Dad chuckled. "Does that mean you want to go home?"
"Yes."
"Well, your right eye won't open, you still have tubes attached to you, and your doctors say you have to stay."
"I'm feeling fine."
That's our A.J. A few lines of a story later, he was back asleep.
The next day, his humor came out again. "I just love talking. I'm in word heaven. I just think a word and it happens."
Was this really the same child that unresponsive only four days ago?
A.J. went home less than one week after his surgery, walking and talking. If you try to tell me that God had no hand in his healing, I'm not going to believe you. There is no doubt in my mind that God has special plans for A.J., and his healing is part of these plans.
Over the next few months, A.J. continued to improve dramatically. We recently discovered that his initial head injury was even worse than we first thought. That's okay. All it means is that our Jehovah Rapha had an even bigger miracle for A.J.
There is still healing that needs to take place, but I am convinced there is nothing too big for God. A.J.'s story is a testimony to God. What a mighty God we serve!

This story touched me and made me think of countless others in similar situations who have been touched by God with His miraculous healing and love.
God Bless that young man as he goes forward in his life. May he use his story to glorify God and walk in His ways always.
