And said my prayers like any good Christian gent’;
I left for work at six, still groggy,
’Cause I have given up my tea for Lent.
By seven I was workin’ in the fields,
Breakin’ my back to earn my daily bread.
I gave up sleep to get to work on time,
And never yet have lingered in my bed!
The day wears on, and I am balin’ hay,
The sun beats down; I’m workin’ like a horse.
A mix of grime and sweat now coats my back,
But I won’t complain, ’cause it’s my saintly cross.
Now and then I take a sip of water,
But these small sips are all the breaks I’ll take.
I need the bucks I make by slavin’ here;
I can’t afford to make the least mistake.
’Round six o’clock the shadows start to grow,
And then, at last, the sun begins to cool;
I smiled with joy: my day is almost done,
But then you arrived, lookin’ like a fool.
You spent the mornin’ sleepin’ in yer bed,
Enjoying sweets and playin’ with the girls.
At noontime you were restin’ in the shade,
But now you think you’ll give the job a whirl.
You somehow think that you can earn the same
As those of us who sweated through the day;
I hate to tell you, but that ain’t how it works,
You must be good in order to be paid.
I see you flex yer muscles now you’re here,
But that won’t be enough to pay yer bills;
I’d hate to be you when you go see the boss,
’Cause by my count, you’re goin’ straight to hell.
