By my blemishes,
Afraid that people would laugh
At the scars which mar
My tender heart,
So I hid myself in shadows,
Away from mocking eyes
And poisoned comments.
With a stroke of genius
I sewed myself a burqa
To hide my imperfections
And ward off embarrassment,
Offering the world
The perfect me,
Enhanced by the brilliant hues
Of exotic silks.
But the brilliant silks only put a wall
Between my heart
And the hearts around me,
For ’twas not beauty
The empty eyes were looking for
After all.
Now I offer my blemished features
To the world,
Knowing ’tis not perfection
People need,
But the warmth of a love
Which springs from a heart that’s real,
Scarred though it may be.
There are still moments
The mocking wounds me;
There are still times
I want to run to the shadows
To hide who I am—
But I choose to stay here
With bared face,
Daring embarrassment
That I may reach your heart
With mine.
