Oh, Lord, when I let some worldly crumb distract me from You, even for a moment, help me to be as desperate to get back to You, as my dog was to get back into my presence.
I thought more about my little dog’s actions. If I leave the house, even for a couple of minutes, when I come back she dances and twirls and jumps for joy, as if we had been separated for ages. Nothing is more important to her than me coming in that door again; and she attempts to show that to me, with every ounce of emotion in her little body.
Dear Lord, I know I too should be overflowing with utter and complete joy, just to be in Your presence. Please forgive me the many half-hearted welcomes I have offered You.
I pondered on, about my little dog’s faith in me, how trusting she is of me. If I ask her to follow me, to go “bye-bye” with me in the car, she will faithfully follow. She has no idea where I am taking her, or what I have in store for her, but she looks at me with such trusting eyes. Whether I am taking her to the vet, or to a friend’s, or someplace new, she simply cuddles beside me, trusting that I have her best interest at heart.
Oh Lord, when You ask me to follow You into unknown territory, why do I often squabble and question, instead of trusting that You always have my best interest at heart?
My dog’s not big, she is a little thing, but I found out she would use every ounce of herself to defend me, with her life I think, if it came to that. We live in a rural area, and one day as we were walking she got in front of me and barked and barked and moved side to side in front of me, not allowing me to take another step. I looked ahead down the path and there was a snake. It may have only been a garden snake, I don’t know, but to her it seemed dangerous. She was determined not to let the snake near me!
Oh Lord, when that evil serpent crosses my path, let me always be willing to defend You, from even the very appearance of evil, with my life if necessary.
Some days, when I am busy, I ashamedly admit, I give my dog very little attention, only taking the time to give her a little food and a little water. Still, she so selflessly waits, just to hear my voice call her name. She is content with what I give her, but ready in a second to shower me with love if I call her.
Oh precious Lord, You give me everything, You feed me, body, soul and spirit, You care for me in every way. There is never a second that You neglect me, You love me beyond reason. Yet, I so selfishly neglect You. I am often not content and complain, even at times questioning Your love, when I don’t hear from You the second I think I should. Forgive me...
Oh Lord—if only I could have the love and faith and total commitment to You, that my dog has to me.

It was very clever to have used the dog's behavior as a seque each time to what truly matters in life, which is our "Devotion" to God.
This was fresh, and held my attention throughout- I enjoyed it so much. Thank you. God Bless~
