She shook her head and grinned as the line moved up, giving her a better view of him. Alan was in several of her classes and they actually shared a college advisor, but Katrina could never work up the nerve to speak to him outside of the grocery store. It probably was safer that way—admiring him from afar—but never getting close enough to grow a relationship.
"Kat...look, there's a shorter line right there." Carrie Lynn, her roommate, began to whine. "Why can't we just checkout over there and be done with it?"
"It's because I want to be in this line. They always have the chocolate that I want."
Carrie Lynn snorted and rolled her eyes as she peered over Katrina's head before grinning widely. "Oh, I see why. It's cause of Alan." She paused and grinned, "He really isn't all that bad looking—a nice piece of eye candy."
Katrina felt her cheeks stain as she swatted at her friend. "Carrie Lynn! Not here!"
The all too familiar look of innocence crossed her friend's face. "Gee, you act like I can't join you in the sport of checking out the checkout."
Katrina sighed and shook her head, moving her wheelchair forward. She was determined to tune Carrie Lynn out, but her friend had other plans.
"You know, ogling at him would be easier in class and on campus than here."
Katrina sighed and gave Carrie Lynn a half hearted glare. "I know, I just..."
"You're just scared to talk to him." Carrie paused and then grinned wickedly, "I dare you to say something more than just 'hey'."
"But..."
"It's a step above the checking out of the checkout boy, Kat. You should go for it."
Katrina hesitated, and bit her lip. It would be an improvement from what she was doing right now. She swallowed nervously. Slowly, the line moved forward until it was her turn to checkout. Finally, Alan looked her and smiled widely.
"So did you find everything okay today?" He asked and Katrina nodded until Carrie nudged her.
"Oh, um, yeah, I found everything perfectly today. Thanks."
Alan nodded and his eyes met hers. "Great! I'm glad to hear that."
She flushed and looked down. He named the total and Katrina quickly paid.
Baby steps were probably the best way to get through this. She continued to wheel herself out, ignoring Carrie Lynn's smirk. After all, she'd just come back tomorrow to continue to checkout the checkout boy.
