When we pursued the rays of the sun
To see where they might lead?
Our faith meant chasing butterflies
As we blazed new paths,
Laughing like children
With smiles to greet each flower on the way;
Joy was found in every step
As we ran hand-in-hand with Daddy;
Our love was the heart of every moment,
Filling every crevice that we touched
With light.
But those days are long gone by,
An era carried to the grave.
Chasing butterflies is far too dangerous—
Who knows where they might lead?
What if a child, who watched the stars
Might fall into a stream?
What if a man was consumed by fire
For following a dream?
To keep us safe, we’ve built a dungeon;
With walls that keep us safely contained.
There’s now no danger of drowning children
Or burning souls,
’Cause every law, so firmly laid
Has chained us far from any harm.
Now faith is the solemn tightening
Of our chains,
As we twist them tighter
Around our souls,
And cage our hearts
With rule by rule.
In this age, love has become nothing more
Than a stained glass window
Placed between the bars,
Whose colored light
Has hidden the tears
Which scar our faces.
