Shapes our thinking evermore
And changes the prevailing point of view—
An event without precedence
Rocks convention to the core—
I recall from my lifetime only two.
First was downtown Dallas, Texas,
Late November, sixty three—
When President John Kennedy was killed—
I sat silent, stunned, perplexed
In the school refectory—
The emptiness, our brash young voices stilled.
While I live I’ll not forget it—
Something sinister was born—
I saw a dark I never wished to know;
All my youthful hopes affected,
Aspirations ripped and torn—
I’d never thought humanity so low?
Almost forty years went past
‘Till a blue Manhattan morn—
Commercial planes became the tools of war;
Stood dumbfounded, watched aghast—
Everything we value scorned—
Fanatics brought their terror from afar.
Thousands killed by callous fiends,
While the world’s sad millions cry,
Much more than just two towers came crashing down;
We saw live on TV screens
‘Universal goodness’ die—
Left shattered grand illusions on the ground.
Both events made such an impact,
Deeply influenced my thoughts,
Indelibly imprinted on my mind—
For these stark and awful acts
And the brutal truth they taught
Will not fade with the fleeting feet of time.
Two frozen days beyond compare
When the hands of time stood still
When life itself seemed hanging in suspense;
Some part of me still lingers there
And while I live it always will—
Recollecting is perhaps recompense.
