But since you flung the stars in space with just a simple touch
And planned the massive universe so vast beyond our dreams,
And scooped out dirt for oceans, roaring rivers, quiet streams,
Well, I have one request, Lord, and I hope that you’ll agree
That it’s not so excessive that You’d be ashamed of me,
But couldn’t You just find a way to give me more leg room
While I am crouched and cramped here in this dark and narrow womb?
“Why did You have to make my arms and legs so bloomin’ long?
I’d bend and curl them up but, Lord, You made them way too strong!
I’d like to do some push-ups or perhaps a four-mile run.
If I could have a basketball I know it’d be such fun.
I’d like to do some jumping jacks or maybe run in place
But mom would kick me out and I’d be gone without a trace.
I’m open to suggestions, Lord, but something’s got to give;
I might be all worn out before I’ve had a chance to live.”
“My son, please pay attention for I know just how you feel.
My Son was born in circumstances that were not ideal.
I’m sure that He felt just as cramped and wished He could be born
Before the whole nine months was up; He felt so tired and worn.
But think about your mother as she holds you night and day.
Sometimes she’s been so tired that she wished you’d go away.
But then she feels a little bump, and happy that it’s you
Who’s doing exercises like nobody else can do.
“Her family’s all excited; you could show up any day.
They’ve had some baby showers and they’re guessing what you weigh.
They’re picking out some names for you like Horace and Eugene;
Because you’re from the South, one plans to call you ‘Pinto Bean.’
You have an older brother who insists he just can’t wait;
He plans to take you fishing and he’s gathered worms for bait.
Before too long, your dad will shout ‘My handsome son is here!’
You’ll recognize your dad for he’ll be grinning ear to ear.”
“Dear Lord, the years have passed since I was born upon this earth.
I sit here by the river contemplating life since birth.
You’ve given me so much, Lord, that I cannot comprehend
How You could be my Savior, my Redeemer, my best friend.
“I wonder just what lies ahead when my life here is through.
Will those who’ve gone before me stand there at the gate with you?
This journey I must do alone; no family by my side.
But You will be my escort, my sustainer and my guide.”
“Dear Son, they’ll all be waiting and I’ll likely let them know
What day you’ll be arriving, for each loved one loves you so.
Right now they all are talking, making plans for that great day
When you will come to join them, not to visit, but to stay.
“Remember your discomfort as you waited in the womb;
How you begged to be released from all the darkness of that tomb?
So, now that you are homesick just to see us face to face,
You’ll find comfort just in knowing things are already in place.”
