Nelda, why is your pretty hair baby pink!”
“Seems to me it’s not their concern
From choices I make it’s me that’ll learn.”
“Mom, can’t really chat, I’ve got a fun date
Have an open mind--he’ll be here by eight.”
“Have an open mind? What’s that mean--
Is he tattooed and pierced, will he cause a scene?”
Rolling her eyes and shaking her head,
“Don’t worry mom, you’ve nothing to dread.”
Nelda teased her hair in funny directions
Then gave a wink to the mirror’s reflection.
Mom peeked through the blinds in sheer disbelief
At the guy on the Harley--Oh my, oh good grief!
His mostly shaved head had spikes Mohawk style
He strolled to the door, black lips formed a smile.
“Hi Mommy-o, is Nelda Babe ready?”
Feeling queasy and faint, she held herself steady.
Words did not come, she just couldn’t speak
Her once sweet daughter was dressed like a freak.
“Where are you going, it’s not Halloween--
Gasping she said, “There’s holes in your jeans.
Your ghostly white face and black outlined eyes
Make you look like someone who’s met their demise.”
A ball bearing poked through Nelda’s date’s nose
Strangely it matched the style of his clothes.
Thoughts swirled like ugly tornado debris
In the head of this mom--then came her plea.
“Dear, have some pride--please go wash your face,
I’ll be shunned by neighbors, I’ll be disgraced.”
“Mom, calm yourself down, don’t be upset,
I’ll not do anything to warrant regret.”
“There’s really a simple explanation,
We’re dressed for a themed celebration.”
Nelda rode the Harley which roared down the street
While her mother still wished she’d been more discreet.
